R18 ULTRA CHAIR Launch

Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram have developed their new R18 ULTRA CHAIR using methods borrowed from the future of automotive manufacturing in collaboration with Audi's Lightweight Design Center. The chair's multi-material space frame is made from carbon composites, carbon micro-sandwich and high strength aluminum and weighs only 2.2 kg or 77 ounces. The chair embodies Audi's ultra lightweight design credo completely by following strict guidelines to shave off every ounce of excess weight.
At Design Miami/ the chair's designers and engineers are giving visitors an intimate insight into their studios and labs, displaying drawings, samples, models, mock-ups, moulds and prototypes from the various stages of the development process.

The installation OUTRACE by Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram on Trafalgar Square in London attracted millions of visitors -physically on Trafalgar Square as well as a global audience on the web. The piece empowered the general public to take control of eight industrial robots on loan from Audi's production line. From the tens of thousands of messages received 3.112 were played and published as videos on www.outrace.org.

Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram have conceptualized, designed and built a new retail outlet space for Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg that embraces Nymphenburg's history and looks into the future. The historical grinding shop of the manufactory, built in 1790 has now been renovated to its original state as it was in the late 18th century. A solid block of metal library shelving has been inserted by the designers and exposed electrical wiring draws vectors of thin cables and fluorescent tubes over the historical ceiling. Vintage machine tools and furniture, work benches and cabinets selected from the archives and storage spaces of the manufactory have been restored and put to use as displays.
The Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg Outlet is open exclusively on Saturdays from 10:00 to 16:00 h.

Opened to the public in 2005, Casa da Música designed by Office for Metropolitan Architecture invigorated the traditional concert hall with its faceted exterior, daring interior forms and innovative use of materials and in a single stroke established a radically-new cultural icon and vibrant public space for the city of Porto. At the beginning of 2008 German artist Carsten Höller initiated a project for a temporary bar, restaurant and nightclub in central London concerning the intersection of Congolese and Western culture: THE DOUBLE CLUB. He has invited Kram and Weisshaar to join him and producer Jan Kennedy in the planning and realisation of this project for FONDAZIONE PRADA and to contribute several pieces. These new works are dedicated to the "Western" sections of the club including the central freestanding fully copper-reveted and neon TWO HORSES RIDER'S CLUB bar in the courtyard, a new series of Weisshaar and Kram's seminal BREEDING TABLES coated in two shades of gray for the restaurant and custom upholstered benches for the discotheque.

VTOL — VERTICAL TAKEOFF AND LANDING

At the invitation of the Vienna Design Week and with the support of Rieder Smart Elements, the site-specific installation VTOL - VERTICAL TAKEOFF AND LANDING will be presented in the front courtyard of the baroque Garden Palace of the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna. A twisting, glass fibre-reinforced concrete surface - 100 m2 in size and only 13 mm thick - appears to float weightlessly above the ground on a mirrored pedestal. VTOL is shaped with the aid of a set of software tools especially developed by the designers.

CLASSICON will present the TRITON Bar Stool designed by Clemens Weisshaar during the 43rd Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. The TRITON Bar Stool consists of a three-legged steel frame supporting a free-form seat shell made from injection-moulded polyurethene resin.

The international Paperworld fair launches the second manifestation of the exhibition concepts developed by Kram/Weisshaar for Messe Frankfurt over the last two years. The Masterplan for the 50.000 square meters of exhibition space restructures visitor flow and experience around a series of special exhibitions designed by Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram including 160m2 mural by Mode2, 7m tall design model by Luigi Colani, and 350m long walk-of-fame dedicated to archtetypical pens exhibited as oversized models.
The comprehensive design calls for reinjecting momentum into the mechanics of the trade fair and repositions exhibitioning in the age of total communication.
